Back in E-G-Y-P-T!

So when we got back to Athens, we realized that the flight we had scheduled back to Cairo, in order to catch our flight to Bangkok, was too late for comfort. So we changed it to a day earlier. Which meant spending another night in Cairo. I was psyched!

When we first got to Cairo in August, I was freaked out. I was tired, hot, super anxious about the adventure that lay ahead, and definitely a little xenophobic. I even told the first Caironese man who was outwardly friendly to us that we were from Vancouver, fearing he would lob an IED at me. I know, stupid. But I was actually excited to get back there again! Largely because we would be able to go to the crazy night bazaar in Islamic Cairo, the oldest part of the city.

After a short flight, some fun haggling over a taxi into the city with a random Auzzie, and a nap, we set out to Khan Al Khalili - the night bazaar. Picture narrow allies with intricate archways built in medieval times with wall-to-wall merchants, swarms of people, and every food imaginable. So fun! After about 2 hours, Wang was spent and we headed back. But I knew that getting up early (6:30) and going back there was a great chance from some good pics and a good feel for what this place is like without the crowds. Added that it was Friday morning - prayer day so the streets are empty and no one is around - and I was all alone. A little spooky, but well worth it.

And now on to Asia…
