Greece Is For Lovers

It is. I’m serious. If you’re single and in Santorini, they’ve conveniently put some cliffs here that you can throw yourself off in despair. Couples everywhere. And Americans coming out the wazoo.

After a couple of last days in Dahab, enjoying the hilarious company of our small hotel’s staff of young hooligans and pirates, we were off to Athens. The Acropolis at sunset is good, but looking up at it from a balcony dinner table in the so-cute-you-could-puke neighborhood of Plaka is outstanding.

Less than 24 hours later, we were adrift on the cobalt Aegean, headed for the island of Paros, where we camped for 2 days (so cheap! With hot showers, free interweb, and a 5 minute walk to the beach). In addition to being an expert diver, I am also now an expert scooter rider. I scoot. We scoot. And that scooter saw some backroads and dirt switchbacks it has definitely never seen before. In short, Paros is awesome.

On the morning of my birthday, we ferried here to Santorini - a short hop. And Oh My God are those cliffs breath-takingly beautiful. To stand atop them in the town of Oia (ee-ya) and look across at the tightly clustered white buildings gleaming in the late day sunlight, and look down at the deep blue water way below, makes you wobble a little. Way more tourists here than Paros and not too many locals. The beaches here are not that great - black sand is great if it’s fine, but when it’s course, it’s scorching hot and looks like you have dirt all over you. Then again, right now eeeeeverything is fine. And you can see all the pics here - http://picasaweb.google.gr/gmcallister/Greece#
